The cylinder is one of the primary components of pneumatic actuators. It comes in various types, which can be classified according to their operating mode into single-acting cylinders and double-acting cylinders. A single-acting cylinder is one in which the piston rod’s movement in one direction is driven by compressed air, while its movement in the opposite direction is spring-assisted for return. A double-acting cylinder, on the other hand, is driven by compressed air in both directions of the piston rod’s movement.

Cylinders can be classified into three categories based on their mode of motion: linear-motion cylinders, rotary cylinders, and pneumatic grippers. A linear-motion cylinder drives the actuator to perform linear reciprocating motion; a rotary cylinder drives the actuator to perform rotary reciprocating motion; and a pneumatic gripper drives the actuator to perform opening and closing movements, primarily used for gripping and clamping workpieces or products. According to their design, cylinders can be further categorized into standard cylinders, waterproof cylinders, and clean cylinders. Standard cylinders are suitable for general working environments; waterproof cylinders are appropriate for environments with mist and moderate humidity; and clean cylinders are mainly used in cleanroom environments.
